Why can't I send outgoing email?

I just set up email in Outlook 2003. I can receive but not send messages.
SEND attempts do not complete. The message remains in the Outbox. My new
ISP is Bellsouth but my email is still Earthlink. I have contacted both tech
supports and corrected the email account setup. Bellsouth says Outlook might
be corrupted.

Check your SMTP server settings....whose are you using? May be easiest to
use Bell South's SMTP server - if you need to authenticate to it or use a
different port, check with their tech support again.

Try telnetting to the SMTP server on the appropriate port (default is 25,
check with them) -

telnet mail.server.name 25 <enter>

and see if you can see the mail server's banner.

In Outlook, try clicking on Help and choosing "detect and repair".

If that doesn't work, reinstall Outlook by going to Control Panel and
choosing to delete Microsoft Office..instead of choosing "Remove" choose
"Reinstall or Repair".

I got help from Earthlink (human being). After setting up an account and
successfully sending an email through Outlook Express (my old client) he had
me restart the PC. After that, my Outlook test message went through too. I
also now realize that the problem was that email remained unsent in the
outbox even though the SEND process was completed. I really don't know what
we changed but I am reminded that RESTART is often a good idea.

If the items in your outbox weren't showing up italicized, they wouldn't be
sent. You'd have to open them and click Send again.....

Glad you got your problem resolved.
