Why can't I save "My Documents"

George

Am using WinXP Pro PC. I'd like to copy the entire "My Documents" folder to
a CD-reader/writer on the D: drive, but it won't allow it. Here's what I've
tried:

1) If I drag the "My Documents" folder to the D: drive, it tries to put just
a SHORTCUT on the D: drive. Holding down the <cntl> or <shift> key doesn't
make it copy folder contents. Same thing happens if I try to copy "My
Documents" to ANY new folder, like for instance c:\junk on the C: hard drive
instead of the D: drive.

2) I went into Roxio CD creator and put the "My Documents" into the right
section and pressed "record" but it says "drive is in use by another
application (Roxio DirectCD kernel)"... but no other windows are open.
[It's really not a CD problem]

3) What DOES work is I can easily copy ANY of the SUBFOLDERS underneath "My
Documents", but since there are about 10, it's more work to drag and drop
ten times.

Is there anything special about "My Documents" in WinXP that disallows a
full-folder copy? Would appreciate suggestions or workarounds

Thanks,
George

Hi,
If you open "my computer" do you have a "myname's documents" folder in the
right hand pane. If you do right click on it and go to "Send To" and select
your cdwriter from the popup menu. Windows should then create temp files
automatically and put a icon in the system tray (next to the time) when the
temp files have finished being created you can click the icon and write the
files to a CD.

Lets here is that works.

Thanks, Neil, maybe the problem is with one of my PCs...

For my PC#1, you are absolutely right that if you go to "MyName's Documents"
you can click SendTo > (pick the CD-RW drive), and get the whole folder onto
the read/write CD.

But on my PC#2, there's not a choice (in the SendTo list) for picking the
CD-RW drive... I only have the A-drive, email, and other things. PC#2
definitely has a read/write CD, so that's not it...I already copied files to
it and can read filess off of it. Do you think it's the firmware in the
CD-RW drive? Or a WinXP problem? Dell had helped me upgrade firmware on
the other CD-RW once.

Thanks,
George

Have you checked to see if the CDRW is set to record. If you use my computer
and right click on the CDRW then go to properties there should be a
recording tab, select that and make sure the "Enable CD recording on this
drive" is set.

Lets here the result......

All the best

There's nothing like answering your own post in a discusssion group. What
fixed the problem was re-installing the CD driver...

1) In Device Manager... under IDE ATA... click the Secondary IDE Channel >
uninstall. Boot down

2) On re-boot, it will say new hardware found... hardware installed. Re-boot
now? >Yes

3) On re-boot (work fast...make sure Num, F, Caps keyboard lights are 'on'
and click F2 when see Dell (or other) logo...goes into bios. In Bios, hold
<Alt>E until hear beep, then <Alt>F until hear beep (might never hear beep,
keep going). Click save and exit... It will re-boot and show something
about installing IDE...

4) Upon full boot up to WinXP, right click just about any folder see if have
SendTo>D:drive in the SendTo list...it

Hope this helps next person, thanks
George
