Sorry I meant Windows XP my typo apologises.
I don't see a Preferences option that you mention. I got rid of the
Fisher-Price fluff interface crap a long time ago (and why I won't
bother with Windows Vista with its superfluous UI layering) so I am
using the classic view. That also means that I don't use the fluffy
Search Companion.
The "Change Preferences" option is not shown if you switch to the
classic view for the Search Results dialog. The instructions to
switch to the classic view is to use regedit to go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState
and create a data item labeled "Use Search Asst" and set it to "no".
To switch back to using the Search Companion, delete this data item.
However, it is easier to use Microsoft's TweakUI utility, a Windows XP
powertoy, that you can download from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx.
In TweakUI, under the Explorer node, there are checkboxes to use the
classic views for Search in [Windows] Explorer and Internet Explorer.
Uncheck one or both if you want to go back to the Search Companion
view.
