Why can't I open Outlook?

Bob

When I try to open outlook I receive the following error.

The Add-in "Anti-Virus ViRobot" (c:\Program
Files\SecurityShield\ShieldAntiVirus\VrCli.dll) cannot be loaded and has been
disabled by Outlook. Please contact the Add-in manufacturer for an update. If
no update is available, please uninstall the Add-in.
When I click the "ok" button I receive this error, "Cannot start Microsoft
Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook Window."

I can't get into Outlook to try and uninstall any part of the Add-in. This
is an anti-virus software I uninstalled awhile back, and have since went to
Norton. What can I do to fix the problem?

Shield Pro is a rebranded version of ViRobot Expert.

Do you have a version of that AV program that is compatible with your
version of Outlook (and possibly also compatible with whatever version
of IE that you have installed that gets used for rendering HTML-
formatted e-mails)? Are you still using an outdated version of
Shield/ViRobot? You said that you installed Shield/ViRobot but
apparently it was a dirty uninstall. You may have to reinstall their
product to then do a cleaner uninstall, or contact them to ask how to
perform a manual cleanup of the remnants that were left behind (however,
since it is a rebranded version using their AV engine, you're probably
stuck trying to get support from the rebrander).

Outlook disabled the AV add-on because it isn't compatible. So
uninstall Shield/ViRobot and either get a later version or a more
well-known AV program (there are plenty of good freebies). However,
interrogation of e-mail traffic my AV proxies will incur delays which
can cause timeouts between the client and server. Often users end up
having to disable the e-mail scanner in the AV product to get their
e-mail client working again. Besides, e-mail scanning is superfluous as
the real-time scanner performs the same function when the e-mail gets
saved to the hard disk and if and when you ever decide to extract an
attachment to that e-mail.
