why can't I edit data in Access datasheet view?

I have a new Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop running XP, and Microsoft Access 2003.
In datasheet view I should be able to edit data by typing directly
in the table cells. I could do this on my old laptop with Works database.
According to the Help instructions I should be able to with the new
software, but when I type, nothing happens.
 
What have you tried in order to troubleshoot?
Does this happen with all tables and all mdbs?
Can you edit design views of other objects?
