Hi all,

I have 2000 server and 20 XP workstations. All the users
are member of a same group. They all have same rights.
They all log on using their password with no problem. But
later when they try to access server resources by going
into
: MY Network Places---Entire Network---Microsoft Windows
Network----Your server, some users are asked for the
password and others are not. Why? What can I do that all
users are asked for
validation?

Can it be due to the problem with the user profile or XP
service pack 1?

HELP HELP!!!!!!!

- How are your users validated at logon time? Locally, or by
the domain controller?
- Is this behaviour PC-specific or user-specific?

User is validated by the domain controller(user has no
problem logging on to the server initially) and this
behavious is user specific. Why do you ask if it's user or
pc specific?

Rita

Knowing if the problem is restricted to certain PCs,
or if it travels with the user, can be important in tracking
down the cause. Does it travel with the user to every
PC?

I really don't know the answer to that question, because
every user has access only to his/her computer. Assuming
the problem restricted to the computer or travels with the
user, how would you solve my problem.

Rita

I do not know the solution to your problem but
knowing if it travels with the user or not determines
the direction of the trouble-shooting effort. If you
don't spend the time to find out then we cannot
get started.

I was at work today. I found out that it does not travel
with the user.
thanks for all your advise.

Your answer immediately raises the next question:
If the proble, does not travel with the user then it
appears to be machine specific. Does it happen
to all users on a specific machine?

The problem happens to only certain users.

.

Now try this with a problem user on a problem PC:
1. Start a Command Prompt.
2. Type this:
net use /persistent:no
net use * /del
3. Log off
4. Log on as the same user
5. Start a Command Prompt.
6. Type this:
net use
You should see no connections other than those
made by your logon script.
7. This this:
net use x: \\YourServer\ProblemShare
What do you see?

By the way: Are your users validated locally, or are they
validated by a Domain Controller?

My users are validated by the DC. This user can't reach
till the share. He double click on My Network places----
Entire Network---Microsoft Windows Network------Name of
the server, at this point he is asked to Validate.

You have been very helpful. Thanks

Rita

I really need your exact answers to my specific questions
rather than some general observations.
