Why ascii characters in header

Suddenly ascii characters show up in document headers and hyperlinks have
{hyperlink} firld codes. How do I undo that?

Try pressing Alt-F9 to toggle the field codes - if necessary, ensure
that you have selected the relevant part of the document (e.g. the
header, or the document body), then use Alt-F9
