why are trusted sites such a pain?

Phil

I thought one of the benefits of identifying
sites as Trusted (Internet Options->
Security->Trusted sites) would be less popups
(dialog boxes) asking if it was OK to do
this-or-that while viewing those sites.

I guess i was wrong.

e.g. tell IE that newegg.com is trusted and
all you get are "popups" every time newegg.com
wants to get a file from secure.newegg.com,
images10.newegg.com, etc.
So I add these sub domains to my trusted list and
the popups stop. Fine. But i thinking: do i have
to do this every time i designate a site as
trusted?
Defiantly NOT making browsing any easier.

Then today i click on a link and get:

Security Warning. The current Web page is
trying to open a site in your trusted sites
list. Do you want to allow this?

current site: edbott.com
trusted site: newegg.com

Why in the world should anyone care if a site
they are viewing wants to open a site they've
ALREADY SAID THEY TRUST?! How is this "protecting"
me? It's not like it's trying to send me to some
porno site...

What am i missing here? Any comments would be
appreciated.

Hi Phil

Trusted sites are simply subject to the security settings that you define
against this security zone and behave as they always have in Internet
Explorer versions prior to Windows XP SP2. Pop-up control is a new,
slightly different mechanism (as I understand it). You can read more about
the pop-up blocker here ...

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/web/sp2_popupblocker.mspx

and here ...

Did you try adding *.newegg.com to your trusted sites list?

The reason for prompting on redirections from untrusted sites to trusted
sites is to prevent zone-elevation bugs whereby an untrusted site is able to
redirect to a trusted one.

Eric and Mark, thank you both.

Using "popup" when i meant "dialog box" was

not to smart--especially in an IE newsgroup

Oh well..

Did you try adding *.newegg.com to your trusted sites list?

I knew there had to be a better way!

Any harm in always using wildcards for trusted sites

*.microsoft.com, *.time.com, etc?

Thanks
