Why are the footnotes I inserted not numbering right?

I have inserted additional footnotes in an article I am editing, but the word
is not automatically updating the footnote numbers.

If you are Tracking Changes, the numbers will sort themselves out once you
have Accepted all Changes.

Otherwise, sometimes Word fails to recognize existing notes in the document
as footnotes or endnotes. The main symptom of this problem is the refusal to
renumber existing notes when you add new ones. The most common cause of this
problem is converting the document from WordPerfect. Footnotes and endnotes
do not convert well. Thus far, no one has found a solution to this problem
other than manually reinserting all of the notes and copying the text over.

It¹s also possible that the person who created the document did not realize
Word had a note feature, and manually created endnotes instead (this is more
common than you might think). If View>Footnotes is grayed out, this is
likely the case.

Are you tracking changes? If so, numbering of any kind, including footnotes,
will not be correct until you accept all the changes.
