footnotes

Allen in N.O.

After deleting the footnote "marker" and the corresponding footnote is
automatically deleted, how do I renumber the following footnote "markers" and
those markers corresponding footnotes?

I've deleted F'note marker #2, footnote #2 disappeared, but now I can not
renumber the remaining markers and footnotes. I've tried all the MS Word
online help ideas... I guess I missing something.

Thanks for assisting.

Assuming that you deleted the footnote reference in the *body* of the
document, the remaining footnotes should renumber automatically. Could this
be a document converted from a different file format?

Are you tracking your changes? In Word 2003, a deleted footnote "marker" was
considered to be still there, since it was simply hidden, rather than
permanently gone. I don't know if 2007 behaves the same way.

If you are tracking changes, I think that accepting that particular deletion
will cause the remaining footnotes to behave.

Good point. In a document with Track Changes on, any numbering will be
incorrect before you accept or reject the changes. And, yes, this applies to
Word 2007 as well.
