why are some of the e mails in outlook express not readable

Q

qcanpc18

Lately, maybe 2 a day, I receive an e mail that I cannot read. It looks like
jibberish, cannot figure out why it happens. Most all of my other mail that
comes in are ok. I am running windows xp, explorer 7, outlook express 6. My
virus and firewall are McAfee. I thought that perhaps its being filtered out
on purpose, none of them were important mail. Just am curious about this.

I deleted them, the words were in english but scrambled, when I receive
another I will send it to you, when I tried to change encoding windows would
not work, had to change it back-could not change encoding to what you
suggested. Also, your link did not work-

What sort of "jibberish"? Copy and paste in an example.

Tools | Options | Read | Fonts. In the first box select Western European. In
the Encoding field select Western European ISO.

Did you try the On The Web link? That takes you to the OE General newsgroup
using the Web interface as you are.

Note that if someone creates a message using Word and that copies and pastes
it into an e-mail, you will see some crazy looking characters.

Thank you, I will look into what you suggested, I bet though you are right
about word being used-next time I receive one I will try to copy and paste
and sent it to you- is there another way I can send it if that does not work?

B

Bruce Hagen

No reason it won't paste. If you see squares and question marks, etc., Word
is most likely the cause.

Next time you get one, in the OE main window, click on View | Encoding and
select Unicode (UTF-8) and see if that makes it more readable.

Q

qcanpc18

I will do as you suggested, some of them have been squares and? marks, some
letters jumbled up like a child that cannot spell-waiting for one to show up
again-

Tried UTF-8 did not work-trying to send you one I received last night-here

tried to copy and paste but was not sucessful-

Oh. That's what you mean by not readable. Do you notice that you do not
recognize the sender? It's called SPAM! They add those nonsensical words to
make a message body rule less likely to work.

Delete and carry on.
