Why are my Office menus invisible/only outlines?

In both Word and Outlook, recently all my menus (file, edit, etc) no longer
show up when I click on them. I only get a ghostly outline of where the menu
should be. Any ideas for a fix?

i get exactly the same problem, but not with word. I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling outlook. No difference. I suspect it is virus related but
Virus scanner can't pick anything up. Nothing on google I can see either.
This is a real pain.
