why are my files once saved in Word now in wordpad?

I use MS Word 2003 and save files as Word docs.
When I try to access them they are in wordpad and all screwed up.
Why?

Are you trying to open them from Windows Explorer?

If so, click on a Word file, then click File > Open With > Choose program.
Now select Microsoft Office Word and check the box "Always use this
program....", then OK. Now try opening a Word file.
