Why are my email messages visible when I open Windows Mail

I would like to know how to change my settings so when I log on my old email
messages do not show in the back ground

Not at all certain what you mean by "show in the back ground"?

Try view menu>current view>hide read messages.

If that is not what you meant then please get back to this thread with more
detail.
