Why are my CDs copying as a 'read only' documents?

cy original documents have no restrictions yet when I burn them to a CD, they
copy as 'read only." There,fore, I cannot delete or modify. This is very
frustrating. I cannot change in the properties box. Anyone have other
advice? I am using Professional Office 2003 and have experienced the problem
copying with Excel and with photos (new computer).

CD ROM - CD "R"ead "O"nly "M"emory. That's why.

Files on a CD are always considered read-only. When you copy them off
the CD onto your hard drive, the read-only attribute is set on the
copied file. However, you should be able to reset that attribute (for
the file on your hard disk) from the property sheet of the file.

And for later info, this ng is for MS Access the db app. - not a general
access ng
There are Office specific ng's
You might find it easier if you used the free Outlook Express newreader to
access ng's
the server is msnews.microsoft.com

This question is asked all the time.

Go read the hundreds of previous answers and you will find that nay file
saved to a CD is set as read-only. A CD is READ ONLY that's what the RO in
CD-ROM means.

Just a guess on my part, but if one uses CD-RW's instead, wouldn't that then
allow them to modify, delete, update, and do whatever with their databases?

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way, in my experience. Files on CDs
are considered to be read-only, even if it's actually a CD-RW disc in a
CD-RW drive.

Not AFAIK.

CD-RW is meant to write the _whole_ file at the same time while database
processing modifies _part_ of the file.

Wow. That stinks. Thank you both for the info. Actually, it is good you knew
that. I'm sure people probably learn that the hard way a lot, so hopefully
this message will help a few people to avoid that mistake.

Pardon my ignorance and thank you for the answer. I used to use 'floppy
discs.' How does one back up a financial document that may have to recreated
if the computer crashes? I can't copy a 'read only' document, can I? Can I
delete it?

Actually you can update a Jet database on a CDRW (and DVD?RW) using Roxio
Drag-To-Disc (part of Roxio Media Creator) and I believe you may be able to
do it with the earlier software Adaptec/Roxio DirectCD.

Seeing this conversation I copied a central database onto a CDRW formatted
for use with Drag-To-Disc and reattached the application and it worked just
fine. The File System on the CD is CDUDFRW using this method and it seems to
work just like a hard disk drive I even popped it into another machine and
was able to use the database as though is was on the hard disk, well I
never.

I have just discovered this myself, I now need to think if it could be of
any use. (vbg) Will need to bear error 3043 in mind, "Disk or Network
Error", though.

BTW I am using Windows XP; I also note that when copying a file from a CDROM
to the Hard Disk it no longer sets the read only attribute.

Interesting ...

I use Nero with InCD (admittedly a few years old now) and I couldn't do
this. I haven't seen any reference to CD_UDF_RW format with Nero.

Yes you can. You can copy the "read-only" document back to your HDD after
the machine has been restored. You can then edit and save on your HDD as
normal.

Just one thing I found if I zip it before hand it does not give any problems

If you write a document to a CD, it gets written to the CD as 'Read Only'
(because files on a CD cannot be anything else). When you copy it from the
CD to your computer the 'ReadOnly' flag is copied with the file.

If you Zip it up first, the read-only flag is saved by the Zip program, and
kept as whatever (not ReadOnly) when it is retrieved from the Zip.
(If you copied the Zip file from the CD onto your hard disk, you would find
that it (the actual Zip file) would be ReadOnly)
