why are most of my menu's greyed out, and I am unable to use them.

Hi, When I went to use word 2003 today, most of the menu's on top were greyed
out and I was unable to use them or get into them. Is it possible to sort
this problem out?
 
Do you get a message about the documents being locked for edit? Is this a
trial version of Office 2003 that has expired? If it is a retail version,
have you activated it?
