Why are _vti_cnf Folders everywhere?

I'm new to FP having just bought 2003 and Mr Colligan's book. It speaks about _vti_cnf folders but is it right that I seem to have them dotted around most of my filing system?

They are the meta control folders/files for FP webs and should only be in your web folders

Thanks Stefan, so if I have _vti_cnf folders elsewhere (which I do) eg. folders in 'My Documents' can I safely trash them?

No, because you could have a disk base web under your My Documents folder.

But I haven't built or published any websites yet, just basics to learn the software. Do I still need to keep those folders?

Yes.
The standard rule is, if FrontPage automatically created them, leave them alone.

You should not have them Anywhere Except in FP webs you have created
- If you have mistakenly created a FP web of your My Documents folder, or worse still you hard drive, you will have major problems
- If they are only in sub folders of say My Webs (under My Documents) - that Ok

What folders have them

generally they're only found in FrontPage "webs" or FrontPage enabled
"sites" (fp 2003). probably what's happened is you opened FrontPage, hit
file/ open web then opened "my documents" thereby turning the my documents
folder into a web.

HTH

It's really no big deal the vti_cnf folders won't hurt anything.

They are in 8 of the 12 subfolders of 'My Documents'. There are none on
'C' as far as I'm aware. One of the 12 subfolders is FP2003's 'My Web Sites'
folder - this has them too.
If this is such a big issue why isn't it better documented?

Thank you for helping with this.

In my experence, if you make the C drive a web it can lead to problems, but just making the My Documents folder a web will not.

My Document contains a My Webs folder which is the default storage location for disk based webs if you have vti folders in My
Documents or folder beneath it with the exception of the My Webs folder you can open those folders in FP and remove the web files.

Converting My Documents to a web can lead to problems for users that are not careful
- that would make it the root web and if it ever was deleted in FP, it would (and all content below it) disappear (w/ no recycling
bin)
- any other real webs under it (say in not in my webs, and not directly in My Documents) would not be valid - subwebs cannot exist
except under a root web or subweb)

All the invalid web folders should be removed CAREFULLY in FP by opening them in FP (say the My Documents web folder) and right
clicking the root web to select Delete - BUT the making sure to only select the 1st Option (Remove FP information only), - not the
second option to delete all content

There are any number of folders if converted to a web and deleted will cause problems -- recycling bin or not. But the act of making
My Documents a web will not cause any harm. My advise is the same as yours about removing the FP files and folders.
