Why am I getting duplicate email?

Outlook 2007
Upon upgrading from 2003 to 2007 all emails have started coming in twice. I
know this is frequently caused by the way some rules may be set up. There
are no rules at this time. Any ideas?

Can also be caused by intergrated anti virus, if you have such, uninstall
the AV retest, if that cures it reinstal AV without the outlook intergration

I recently switched to Avira (free version), but I tried it with NO
antivirus program at all just to check - it didn't make a difference. I
don't see an email option in Avira.

Is this with all emails or just specific ones?

You could try checking your rules to see if you have a duplicate one set up,
and also try unchecking the "leave a copy of messages on server" in the mail
account advanced properties.

Sorry Fred, just noticed you said there are no rules, my bad. :)

Try the option for not leaving messages on the server...

I want messages left on the server in case I have to access my email via the
web from an alternate location. It was always left on the server pre
Outlook 2007 with no problems. Keep in mind the problem started on my
upgrade from 2003 to 2007, I assume the problem is someplace in the
transition.

If you created a new mail profile as part of the installation, then Outlook
will need to download all of the messages on the server again because the
information specifiying what you've downloaded already is a per-profile piece
of data. A new profile means Outlook can't know what the prior profile
downloaded.

If you need to keep the messages on the server for access elsewhere,
you might want to see if the email server supports IMAP access.

That way, Outlook and other programs act merely as a client, and the
mail (all folders, all messages, etc.) are stored on the server only.
COPIES are stored in each client program, but the data remains on the
server.

When you delete a message in one of the clients, it merely marks the
message for deletion on the server. Until you tell the client to
purge those messages, they will remain on the server. When you purge,
then they're deleted on both server and client.

IMAP is supported on GMail, GMX and several other email services. If
you're using Hotmail (i.e., Windows Live), you would be using HTTP and
the Outlook Connector, which functions in much the same way as IMAP.

Might be worth looking into.
