Why after I reply to an email, the original is lost?

Ok here's my problem. My email was fine a few weeks ago, whenever I would
reply to a new message my original would be visible in my Inbox and the reply
would go into my Sent to Box but I would be able to access my original email
if I needed to. Now, if I reply to an email, the original automatically goes
into the Sent to box and I don't have the original in my Inbox anymore. I
have gone to tools, options, Email options, and the close original message on
reply or foward option is not checked. Everything seems to be fine but why is
this happening?

Please help!
Thank you.

What version of Outlook are you using?

Do you have a view set on your Inbox to only display unread items?

Hi Ben,
Well, I have Microsoft windows XP professional with Outlook 2000. I can view
both the read and the unread emails.

And you're saying that the message you're replying to ends up in the Sent
Items folder?
