Why afer printing a previously saved document am I asked to "save"

Whenever I print a previously saved document and then go to close that
document, I am being asked if I want to "save" it. It's quite annoying.
 
If you have just printed the document, then the fields have been updated,
which dirties the document.

What can I do to avoid that, or is it one of those things that one has to
learn to live with.
 
I think you have to live with it. You can clear the check box for "Update
fields" on the Print tab of Tools | Options, but (a) this can cause serious
problems, and (b) fields in the header will be updated anyway (though I'm
not sure this generates an Undo item)

I'm having the same problem! Can you tell me what you have installed so that
we can isolate the problem? I'm using WinXP SP2, Office XP SP3, Novell,
Trend Micro. I also have an HP Business Inkjet 1200. I was thinking the
printer was the culpruit but it's also likely Word. What printer do you have?
 
I have Windows XP Pro. SP with Office Basic (although they seem to have
thrown in Powerpoint.) The printer is a network printer, an HP 4100 laser
printer. I have it almost every time, if with the dropdown of "File", but my
assistant only seems to have the problem when we use the macros that were set
up by our IT guy. Also, it doesn't happen all the time. I am convinced it
is Word. In fact I ahve another problem which I will post now with a new
post.
 
Whenever you print a document, fields are updated (assuming you have "Update
fields" checked on the Print tab of Tools | Options, as you should). This
"dirties" the document. There are other factors that can dirty a document if
you merely open it; see “WD2002: You Are Prompted to Save Changes When You
