can't print without saving first?

i am an elementary school teacher who types and prints a lot of student work
on my computer. most of the time i just need one copy. with my old version of
word, a box would pop up asking me whether i wanted to save a document when i
printed it, and i said no. now, whenever i try to print a document, it asks
me what i want to save it as, and if i click cancel, then it won't print. i
don't need to save every yesterday-i-saw-a-bunny-and-the-bunny-looked-at-me
story on my hard drive forever. how can i fix my computer so it will print
without making me save first?

What version of Word are you using? Using Word 2007 and 2003, I don't see
that behavior.

Are you sure you aren't trying to print to a file? That would be the only
time Word prompts me to save... and, it's a save location for the printed
result, not for the file I'm printing from.

'file, print'.

If you're getting a Save As dialog when you hit Print, that's because the
current default printer is the Adobe PDF printer or a fax application or
something else that "prints" to a file. Press Ctrl+P and see what you have
selected as the default printer.
