Then all I'll have to get is a tonearm, tonearm cable and a cartridge. My current choices for those three items total £800 so it will be quite some time before current project reaches fruition.

Not a great deal, I'd wager.

There must come a point where even the most finely tuned set of ears can not detect an improvement in sound from these devices and I wonder at what financial point is the rolloff?

mine cost £200 back in 1992 and still works great and a few of my collection of vinyl you cant get on cd!
