Who is using the modem to call my ISP?

Every once in a while my modem connection becomes active and wants to
connect to my ISP.

How can I tell what application or service is requesting the connection?

Second question:
When I start IE or Outlook express zone alarms alert me that the want to
connect.

I say OK but do not give them permission to connect without my knowing it.

It's a little bother but I figured that it's safer this way. Is that an over
kill? Should I continue this practice?

I would use ZoneAlarm (as you have already). That should alert you to
whatever processes are asking for internet access. You might have to go
into the Programs list and uncheck (or set to prompt) all applications that
are already set as "Allow", this has the effect of resetting it, allowing
you to find out what is trying to request a connection.

And for your second question, no, I don't think it's overkill. If you think
you want to be notified every time, then that's good.

Thanks for the help
