Recently, my computer was infected by virus. I have to reinstall Windows. I
tried many times, almost every time I tried to connect internet for windows
update, especially, the sp4, virus was detected. I find during download and
install the updates, many application popup and want to connect to internet.
The svchost.exe used a lot of cpu time, make sp4 install very very slow.
I think MS shoul give user more choice for windows update. It's better not
using online install, just download the package and disconnect, then
install. This way may be much safe.

There is a network option for the installation of sp4.
Just download the 120+ MB file ad install it in your own
time.

You can go to the download centre and browse around.

Hope this helps.

You can also get a security updates CD ROM from Microsoft.

Paul.

nothing is safe if you connect a machine to the internet without a firewall.
before you turn on that first internet connection enable the windows
firewall or install a third party one from a cd. then go download all the
updates, don't let anything in until you are done and you know that you need
it.

and oh, by the way, you are going to be receiveing lots more viruses now
that you used your real email address on here.

After a new install you'll want to install these two before connecting to
any network.

I agree!!!
Again: today NEVER ever connect a fresh installed Windows PC to
ANY network, unless you are 200% sure your network is free of
Blaster, Sasser and similar worms (in large corporate networks
you are NEVER sure).
The current strategy is:
1 Install Windows from CD (DO not connect to any network yet!!)
2 Install any critical hardware drivers from CD (the most
critical is the network driver in this stage)
3 Install the latest Service Pack from CD
4 Install the most critical Security fixes from CD or USB stick
(not all hotfixes are critical for this purpose)
5 Now you can connect your PC to the network
6 Run Windows Update and install at least all security related
patches
7 Get all other hardware drivers or updates from the different
vendors websites
8 Get your applications and data from your file server for
installation

This is our current company bare minimum hotfix requirement
before connecting a Windows 2000 PC to the network.

Have you done any AV check?

If you're connecting to the Internet without _first_ enabling a
firewall, you're inviting trouble.
