A freind is having trouble with his desktop.

The desk top is white with all the icons, when I raise the task bar up and
then bring it back down I can see my wallpaper. How do I get rid of the white
screen?
I did a scan and he has 5 adware installed but norton will not let my delete
them.
I hope someone can help me.

I haven't used Norton in ages, but it isn't an antispyware app.
Try posting in microsoft.public.security.homeusers and mention more detail
(XP Home/Pro, event log errors if any, more symptoms, names of malware
detected, blahblahblah.

First have your friend removal any malware by going through these steps:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

He should probably also run at least one of the Smitfraud removal tools:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Smitfraud_Trojan

After the machine is completely clean, if he still has the desktop issue:

Go to the Display applet in Control Panel and look on the Desktop tab. Click
on Customize Desktop, and then click on the Web tab. You will see that
there are checkmarks next to "My Current Home Page" and probably "Lock
Desktop Items". Uncheck these, Apply/OK out.

If you can't enable desktop backgrounds after a virus, MVP Kelly Theriot has
a fix. Look under Wallpaper-Desktop-Disable Changing here:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_w.htm

If Display tabs are missing, run Kelly's registry edit on line 285,
right-hand side "Restore all display tabs".
