Wallpaper hidden

Windows XP Home, HP Pavilion with wide screen.

The wallpaper on a friend's computer is 90% hidden behind a large gray
rectangle covering most of the desktop. The icons on the desktop show up
just fine on top of the gray rectangle so the computer is still usable
but he wants his wallpaper back. If I right click on the rectangle, the
menu it brings up as that of a desktop object, not the one you'd get if
clicking on the wallpaper, with some of the options grayed out. For
example I can't delete it. What would cause this and more importantly
how can I fix it?

I've tried changing desktop themes but the rectangle stays there no
matter which wallpaper is chosen. Only a narrow stripe of it shows
through right above the taskbar/start menu.

I've also run AdAware to remove all spyware and Norton AV to scan for
viruses which turned up nothing.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You might want to try this:

Start -> Control Panel -> Display.
On the Desktop page select "Customize Desktop".
On the Web page, see if there are any items checked in the "Web
Pages" box.
You might want to make sure that "Lock desktop items" is
unchecked".
