Hiding Desktop Icons

I have a friend that is running XP on his pc and he has SP2 also. Whenever he
tries to hide his desktop icons from the desktop properties menu, his
wallpaper disappears - all he has is a white screen. I have XP with SP2
installed also, but I can hide my icons without my desktop wallpaper
disappearing. Does anyone have an idea as to why his is doing that white
screen thing? Do you have to have a certain file type for your wallpapers?
He's tried several different wallpapers and they all do the same. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

No, as far as I know, he is using a picture he took with his camera. I'm not
sure what format it is in though...
