Whirlwind of Problems

After I exited played Starcraft everything went wrong. I can't open the
control panel, back up and restore, or windows update. Also the background is
black and I can't open the personalize menu. Internet works, all my programs
work, but none of the Vista stuff. I ran the SFC /SCANNOW and it didn't find
anything wrong.

I have windows home premium 64 bit edition.
All my drivers are up to date and I'm having no problems with the hardware.

I really don't want to lose everything by having to reinstall Vista.

If anyone has ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

Most games will not run in 64 bit Vista.
Most games will not run in 32 bit Vista.
Most games will run in 32 bit XP.
There be no other workaround.

I know which games work on which versions, starcraft runs fine, but now my i
can't open the control panel or update windows and the background screen is
black.

A little pessimistic in outlook, although not bad as poetry

If System Restore is unavailable, then see if you can create another user,
and whether that account works ok

Control Panel > User accounts

Oops, missed the reference to Control Panel not working

You could try this command from an elevated command prompt, log off and try
the admin account

net user administrator /enable:yes

How can i create a new user if the control panel dosen't work? I click on
control panel and it loads but it is filled in all black. Backup and Resotre
wont work, update won't work. Good idea though if the control panel worked.

Hi Al,

This sounds like a resourses problem, does everything go back to normal
after you reboot ?
How much Memory ( RAM do you have in your machine ? )

Isn't Starcraft the one with the obnoxious copy protection scheme? Maybe
that hosed your machine? Try downloading and installing the latest video
drivers (again) and see if that helps...
