uninstall SP2 by going to control panel, and uninstall. We did exactly as it
said now the computer keeps going to a screen saying windows ended because of
a problem. We cant start the computer at all now, it keeps going to the blue
screen. How can we fix this? I cant format the computer because I have so
many photos of my family on it

Sorry that came out wrong.

make sure that there are no connections to the pc except your mouse, kb and
monitor. Then use the repair feature. Boot from wndows cd, select new
install, select repair current installation..... This will repair the
critical window system files only and will leave everything else intact. You
should be ok because it is likely that the problem is with an external
hardware....

incidently, make sure that your cmos/bios is set to boot from the cd drive.
Press and hold either the F1 key or Del key as you power up the pc. It will
take you to a cmos menu where you can enable the option or set the boot up to
cd drive, save and exit. Make sure your win cd is in the drive too...

You did not say what brand of computer you are working on or whether you have full copies of Windows
XP or just the vendor's restore disks. (or access to a hidden partition for restore)

If you have full copies of Windows XP, you can do a repair installation, and you should (???) not
loose any of the data (pictures).
If you have a vendor restore disks, you most likely will loose the pictures unless you use special
access tools.

But before you start, consider getting software to copy off the files you want onto a CD or USB
drive.
Do a Google on Kloppix. Kloppix is a FREE Linux program that runs solely off the CD and does not
load anything onto the Hard Drive. It has a built-in CD burn program that will let you copy files
off the hard drive to a CD-R or to a USB thumb drive. Kloppix is free to download, (very big file
that requires you to burn a disk using ISO) but many places will sell you a CD for less than $10 USD
to cover costs of shipping and handling. Kloppix is not easy to learn, but you should be able to
handle it. There are other programs that will do the same thing, with a Windows type interface,
but they are expensive.

Post back your software options and you will get more detailed help.

Note that what key takes you to the CMOS settings screen is not necessarily
either F1 or Del. It deopends on what motherboard/computer you have, and
there are many possible choices. There's a good resource for info on this
here: http://michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm
