Which Version of IE6 do I have?

Hi
When I check in IE>help>about it indicates: Version 6, SP2 update. When I
run "winver" it indicates: Version 5.1, SP2 update. If one goes to the
Microsoft download page it tells one to use "winver" to determine the current
version. I'm experiencing various problems with my current IE browser and
wanted to download and replace it if possible but I can't tell exactly what
version I have now.
What are the ramifications it one reinstalls ones current browser, i.e. :
setup etc.? I would appreciate any help on this problem/issue you can give
me. Thanks.

Are you using any program that hides your IE version?

What problems? If they're due to 'hijackware', reinstalling IE won't help

Winver indicates your version of Windows - IE>help>about indicates the
version of Internet Explorer. It is possible to do a repair install of IE in
Windows XP but first its probably a better idea to check for and clean up
any malware/spyware/adware that may be causing the problems. Another tool is
the Windows File Checker. Running this tool will repair/re-install any
Windows file (including IE) which may be corrupted or missing. To run this
tool click on Start > Run and type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes).
Press ENTER and have your Windows XP disk handy as it may very well need to
copy some of the original files from the CD. The guide below is very useful
for other tools and information to secure your machine and keep it secure.
If you've tried all this and still need to re-install IE, post back for more
help.

WARNING: If your PC is already infested with spyware/adware, resist the
temptation to impulse buying of anti-spyware products that you see on the
Net or receive as e-mail Spam. Many unscrupulous companies/individuals are
trying to "cash-in" on people's need for anti-spyware products. Some of
these applications are mere rip-offs of Spybot S&D or Ad-Aware and many are
known to create problems on your machine just to try and sell you the way to
"fix" it. Vendors of "rogue/suspect" anti-spyware products advertise heavily
via Google's "AdWords" or use other deceptive advertising. Proof of this can
be found here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/family_resemblances.htm

Instead, you can get help online from a corps of savvy volunteers who
specialize in busting spyware.

CAUTION!!! Some malware may kill your internet connection when you remove
it. This program, LSPFIX, should enable you to regain your connection by
correcting the errors in your registry. Before you try to remove spyware
using any of the programs below, download a copy of LSPFIX and WINSOCKXPFIX
from the following sites, just-in-case:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

First:
I suggest you read this informative tutorial:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

And for expert online help, the following links are recommended:
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php OR
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/ OR
http://forum.aumha.org/

The folks at these forums have a lot of experience in dealing with
Hijackers/Spyware/Malware. There is no charge for the help and information
available although donations are accepted. Be sure to read the guidelines,
and following their instructions you will download a little program called
HijackThis. Its purpose is simply to scan your computer and generate a LOG
of everything that is running at that moment. It does not decide what is
Good or Bad. That's what the experts at the forums will do. So *DO NOT* just
arbitrarily start deleting what it finds.

Next:
To use these forums, set up an account and post your LOG there, not here.
Someone will analyze it and let you know if anything is amuck and what you
can do to fix it. In the event your chosen site is down -- go here for a
list of other Security Analysis sites and/or forums: http://a-sap.org/

<<<BACKUP>>> <<<BACKUP>>> <<<BACKUP>>>

The FIRST and most important defense in any security program is protection
of your DATA!! When any data gets lost through infection, human error or
perhaps hard drive failure you are then able to restore the files by simply
copying them back to your repaired system. Windows Restore will *not* save
Emails, Address book, documents, photos, music, Favorites and/or Bookmarks,
or anything else created by you using a program installed on the PC. Only
you can determine what is too important to lose. Find a method that works
for you, do a backup and then test it to ensure you could recover. Try to
automate the process as much as possible so the system does the work.

***Always follow safe Internet practices:***

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Keep your anti-spyware up to date, and scan your system regularly.

NOTE: WindowsME/XP users should disable system restore prior to scanning.
Run scans in SAFE Mode to ensure complete removal, then turn System Restore
on again and create a new Restore Point.

3. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email
addresses.

4. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW!
Many viruses, worms, and trojans infect a person's system then immediately
spread themselves to the people in the infected person's address book via
email attachments.

5. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files
with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE
unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

6. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

7. USE A FIREWALL.

Scumware/Cr@pware - Removal & Protection Tools:
Most experts and computer professionals will agree that no *one* tool can do
everything when it comes to spyware/adware. The following list represents
some of the most popular and trustworthy programs available. Most of them
are FREE and compliment each other, meaning one may catch something that
another might miss. Some are quite specialized, while others like Spybot and
Ad-Aware are more generalized.

CWShredder™ Version 2.1 (FREE) - stand-alone version
Removes all variations of the spyware/hijacker "CoolWebSearch".
This is the first line of defense whenever you suspect possible parasite
infestation. Some current variations of CoolWebSearch block Ad-Aware and
Spybot from catching everything.
http://majorgeeks.com/download3019.html
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

Some variants of CoolWebSearch will close every browser window visiting many
anti-spyware sites, anti-virus sites or even Windows Update. It will even
close Spybot S&D and some other anti-spyware applications when you try to
use them. To eliminate this threat, use CWS.SmartKiller Removal Utility:
http://www.safer-networking.org/minifiles.html
http://majorgeeks.com/download4113.html

Spybot S&D (FREE)
Removes hijackers, spyware, adware, usage tracks and more. Resident
""TeaTimer"" feature monitors crucial processes on your machine. It
immediately detects known malicious processes wanting to start and
terminates them. In addition, TeaTimer detects when something wants to
change some critical registry keys. It can protect you against such changes
giving you an option to "Allow" or "Deny" the change.

Ad-Aware (FREE) & Pro
Protects against Data-mining, Ad-Ware, Parasites, Scumware, selected
Trojans, Dialers, Malware, Browser hijackers, and tracking components.

Trojans, Dialers, Worms and other dangerous programs used by attackers to
spy on or damage your private data.

Hi all,
Thanks for the info. What if ones OS has been found to be spyware, malware,
parasite
and adware free and yet the browser does not perform as it should: i.e.
:crashes
from time to time, will not open certain URL's ever, at times will not open
MSN video
player and numerous hang ups and close downs. I've run sfc /scannow, CHKDSK,
Western
Digital disk tests successfuly. Temp/Temp internet files and cookies files
are empty.
Is there ever a time when the IE browser needs to be fixed or reinstalled?
Thanks.

A one word answer? "yes"

If you are sure there is no virus or malware, and System File Checker does
not correct your problem(s) and you've eliminated hardware or driver issues,
you are basically left with three choices:
1. How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in
Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

2. How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

3. Nuke it and re-install Windows XP.

If you have followed the guide I posted before, you already have backups of
your important data. The choice you make here is up to you. Personally, I
would choose option #3, as piling more fixes and repairs onto a damaged
operating system is just postponing the inevitable reformat anyway.

Hi All
Just a few more thoughts/facts that might explain my specific problems:
Here are some specific problems with IE6: There is one URL , that for about
6 months, I can not open but other people have no problem with. When I try to
open it I get the following error message:

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Microsoft Visual C ++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files\Internet

Explorer\iexplare.exe

Abnormal program termination

Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Is this a malfunction of the IE or is this caused by Maleware etc.?

The other problem that has occurred in the last three months is with MSN
video player: I can’t populate the gallery or the playlist but the video
player will work most of the time.

There is always the occasional crash and on some occasions the browser will
not open.

I use a quite extensive “host†file (courtesy of Microsoft); Spyware Blaster
all the time; scan with: Spybot S&D; Ad-aware, lavasoft and Spyware Doctor

The bottom line is that there is always this problem with the IE6 Browser
and I don’t know how to solve it. Thanks.
PS I'm looking into all the data you have supplied

This could be a problem with Java. If using Microsoft VM (java), uninstall
this as there will soon be no support for it. Download and install Java from
Sun Microsystems. Also check these settings in your browser:
1. Start Internet Explorer.

2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

3. In the Internet Options dialog box, click Advanced.

4. Click to select the Disable script debugging check box.

5. Click to clear the Display a notification about every script error check
box.

6. Click OK.

Don't use this - can't help you here.

Good! Perhaps posting your HJT log to spywareinfo can help pin down the
problems.
