What version of IE do I have? Some Java things don't work?

I have Windows XP with SP2 installed. When I look to see which version of
IE I have, I get 2 different answers. If I go to RUN & type in winver, it
says I have 5.1 But if go to Help at the top of the window & click on about
IE, it says I have version 6.0 Both of them do show SP2, which I know I
have. Some sites I go to say I am not using a standard browser & they don't
work right or save right. I also have problems with some Java sites not
opening. I have automatic updates installed & am very confused over this &
would appreciate any help.

Thank you,

Winver tells you which version of Windows you are using. To find out which
version of Internet Explorer you are using, open IE and go to Help > About
Internet Explorer.

In order to view web pages that use Java, you need to have Java installed.
Get it here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_ie.jsp

Is there a command line version checker for IE? I'm running a batch script
that needs to determine if IE is installed and what version it is.
Thanks!

Thanks, but this is NOT what I was looking for.
As I said, my BATCH FILE needs to determine the IE version.

...sorry, ....caught not reading carefully enough again.

regards, Richard
