If you have a US Robotics modem that comes with fax service software, should
you use that software or is the service in XP the better choice?

XP fax is simple and easy to use.. try it first..

Adding a little to Mike's post, third party Fax applications have been known
to cause problems with the XP Fax service, so, by all means, try the XP
service first and move to a third party service only if the XP service isn't
sufficient for your needs.
