I have new AD tree which I am migrating NT member servers
to. I plan to have 2 DC's with AD and DNS running on
them. Do my other servers which are member servers of an
NT domain have to have AD installed on them, or can they
just be made member servers of the new AD domain? What do
I gain/lose by either action? Just a little unsure.

They can be member servers if you don't want them to hold a replica of the
Directory Service

thank you. so if I only have 2 DC's and my other 10
servers are members I am not giving anything up? I don't
think I giving anything up as this is way my NT domain was
setup but just want confirmation I am doing the right
thing.

I planned to make the change between domains via My
Computer, System Properties and just type in the new
domain. Is this the proper way to do this or is there a
tool I should use?

Yeah that's the common way of doing it in windows. This can however been
done with scripting or netdom tool. How ever no working way are wrong.

I would use netdom, as Chriss3 mentioned. When I need to make changes in
more than 5 places I usually script it, this way it will save time and all
changes are done exactly the same way. Another thing is that you have a
script ready if the need arise in the future.
