Which Registry Cleaner?

K

Kelly

The only thing needed to safely clean your registry is knowledge
and Regedit.exe. If you lack the knowledge and experience to maintain
your registry by yourself, then you also lack the knowledge and
experience to safely configure and use any automated registry cleaner,
no matter how safe they claim to be.

I always use Regedit.exe. I trust my own experience and judgment
far more than I would any automated registry cleaner.

My own words and thoughts on the issue:

1. If you know your Windows and registry files well enough, there would be
no need for this post.
2. NEVER trust 'any' registry cleaner unless you know the files you are
dealing with and understand the registry.
3. Your question may pertain to simply Add or Remove files and/or Software
listings, if so:

Troubleshooting, Removing and/or Cleaning Add or Remove Programs
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_a.htm#addremove

4. Registry files are best left alone, when it comes to an automated
cleaner.

Good luck and if you are having any other questions that relate to your post
as to why you feel you "need" a cleaner, post back.

Go for Norton Utilities which comes with Norton's systems Work. You

supporting old Reg Cleaner is because it was crap! It was written by a

Hope this helps.

Hi All,

I have XP + SP1. I use Microsoft OLD RegClean.

Is this the Best Registry Cleaner Available? Or If not which one I
should Go
For my XP System?

Thanks

I always use three registry cleaners; one is Microsoft's and two are third
party.

RegScrbXP eliminates all null and blank lines from the registry. This
significantly speeds up your computer. It can be downloaded form here

Microsoft's program is called RegClean.exe - this one came out in Windows 98
era and works great on Windows XP - this fixes Microsoft's acknowledged
SNAFUs.

Remember to launch the above two programs three times in a row, to get all
the problems out.

I also use RegCleaner to remove unwanted programs from the registry that are
not listed in add/remove programs.

I never said that it did...read my post! I said that it was for Windows 98
and that it works on Windows XP.

It's not supported for Windows XP, which has a different registry than the
9x versions of Windows, so you're playing Russian Roulette with your system.
Use it if you want - it's a free country - but don't counsel others to
follow your mistake.

I used it for a couple of years, and it always seemed to be doing the
right stuff, until I had to rebuild the hard drive and found a bunch of
things that had stopped working - most likely because of RegClean. Sigh!

That is sort of a stupid statement since there is no information avaiable on
what to search for to clean out useless elements.
How do you know what to delete if you don't know whether or not an item is
associated with some other item?

The Internet is filled - jammed - with information about the registry, to
say nothing of your local bookstore. Of course, it takes time and effort to
learn about the registry. Which is why it's so tempting to fall for the
hype.

The real hype here is whether or not an individual can clear out unnecessary
elements in the registry without a reg-cleaner.
When first run a good cleaner will find approximately 300 useless items that
can be deleted from the registry. After installing SP2 about 200 more. How can
you find them without a registry cleaner?

Why do you believe you need to do this in the first place? It is really not
something to mess with since XP does a fine job of taking care of
itself.......

RegClean was never supported...even Windows 98!

I'm not telling you to use it...I'm just telling you how I got great
performance out of my machine...if you don't want performance, don't use it.

G

you obviously never did any performance testing with your computer!

if your computer is told to do nothing...then it is told to skip this
step...then it is told to look for a nonexistent file...and it keeps
repeating these steps...how fast is your computer going to be? I am just
removing these useless steps...performance increase is noticeable.

it's a long tedious process...just like higher math...that is why engineer
created computers. let your computer do the tedious work for you. why did
you buy a computer if you don't use it?

If you are smart enough to write your own code...post it here so I could
evaluate it. If you are not smart enough to write your own code, you are
one of the right places to find it...but then you've got to use it.

You mean "knowledgeable" enough, not "smart" enough, don't you?

<lol> The "performance increase" is in your imagination. I don't know about
your computer, but mine can perform more than 2 billion operations per
second. Admitedly, it never gets a chance to work that quickly, because it's
held up by the pokey FSB, which moves along at a mere 533 million operations
per second.

This response makes no sense to me. Can you elaborate? I don't understand your
questioning as to why I bought a computer. I can write my own code but there
are outstanding registry cleaners already available. I also use one already
available. ????????????

Why do you say that? What is the basis of that claim? XP itself does
NOT clean up obsolete references in the registry. The Installation and
deinstall proceedures DO, and perhaps that is what you mean, yes? - RM
