Which Printer?????????????????

Geoff

Hi,

Wonder if anyone could offer any printer advice??

I have a Canon S820 at the moment - I've been really happy with the results
until the last few days when I'm getting banding in the prints and nozzle
check pattern indicates a blocked photo cyan head. I've done all of the
cleaning/deep cleaning routines and it won't shift. I bought it from
Jessops (UK) in November last year and the same thing happened about a month
after I got it and they replaced it, so this one is the second S820 I've
had. They have offered to replace this one with whatever I want (obviously,
if it costs more that the S820, I will pay the difference). But which one
to go for????

I really like the S820, but don't I'm not sure I want to risk another one -
what about the i950?? Anyone got any thoughts on this printer??

Don't know a great deal about the Epson ones, 830, 915, 935 or 950. I'm not
interested in being able to stick a CF card in the printer and it will get
used 90% of the time for photos as I have an old Epson 760 that I use for
draft stuff and text.

Thanks in advance

Geoff

I wonder if there might be a few threads in this newsgroup already
discussing this... hey, if there are, you could go back and read a few of
them, and.... well, just a thought.

go for the i950. the i series is improved over the s series. It is also
the which magazine best buy. 6 colour printing just doesn't get better.

Before you throw the baby out with the bath water, check a couple of things.
What paper are you using and what print settings? On my s820 I can get
banding if the wrong paper settings are selected. Example - Using Kodak
Ultima and a couple of other low grade photo papers I get banding with the
Photo Paper Pro Setting, but the same setting with Office Depot or Red River
paper gives perfect results. Using the Glossy Film setting usually resolves
problems with the lower grade papers. FWIW, the nozzle check pattern on my
s820 also shows a blocked photo cyan nozzle. I had access to another s820
and swapped the print heads between them. The nozzle check pattern stayed
with the printer and not the print head which indicates to me a dirty
electrical contact and not an actual clogged nozzle. It could even be a
quirk in the nozzle check routine. This doesn't bother me since the printed
output is normal. However, if the dealer is willing to make a deal on an
i950 you would be crazy not to go for it. Whatever you do, stay with Canon!

Thanks for the feedback so far.

I've been using a combination of Canon Photo Paper Pro (PR101), Canon Glossy
Photo Paper (GP301N) and Jessops 260 gsm Glossy. When I've used the
Jessops paper, I've set the printer on "photo paper plus glossy".

I've done loads and loads of prints in the last 7 months and they've all
been fine up to about a week ago when the banding appeared.

Ron - It's interesting that the gaps in the nozzle print seem to be there
irrespective of a different print head in the printer??

I'm not too sure that the store will "do a deal" on the i950, but I guess
its worth a try!! shy bairns get nowt as the saying goes.

Get the i950, it's one of the best photo printers you can buy right now,
and it's very fast and cost effective.

It also has a removable printhead in the rare case it clogs, so you can
easily clean it. Although I've had an i850 for months and it hasn't
clogged once, even after sitting for over a week while on vacation.
