Which Printer Prints on Top Side of Paper?

Does anyone know of any Laser Printers which print on the top side of
the paper?

The circa-1985 HP 3si and 4si printers print on the top side of the
paper. We used to use a 3si to print AP checks.

However, the 8150 and 4100 printers print on the bottom side of the
paper. I called HP and the sales rep said all their printers print on
the bottom.

The problem: Prepaid checks are stacked just like your personal
checkbook: check 1 on top, then check 2, finally to check 500 on the
bottom. We have 5000 pre-printed checks like this.

On the HP 4100, using Tray 2 (which holds 500 sheets), the printer will
print check 1 first, but it prints on the back side of the check -- no
good.

If I turn the stack of checks over, then the printer will print first
on check 500, then check 499, etc -- so the check numbers are reversed,
however, it does print on the proper side of the paper.

There are 5 solutions I see:
1. Print using Tray 1. However, it only holds about 30 checks, and it
exposes checks to theft more.

2. Print using Tray 2, but manually re-shuffle all 500 pages first.
This is time-consuming and error prone. We will print nearly 10,000
checks this year via this printer.

3. Buy the duplexing unit, print with Tray 2, and change the program
to print a blank page followed by a check for each check.

4. Find another printer which prints on the top side of the paper.

5. Next year, order the checks to be printed in reverse order.

Any suggestions?

Talk to a print shop about getting the checks you already have restacked
in the right order. They should have equipment to do this; in fact, if
it's the same shop that printed them for you, they might do it for free.

Well hes a salesman of course. Wants your money, not your problem. Send
the printer back unless he comes up with a solution.

Then phone up all the printer salesmen you can find and tell them they
will make a sale if their printer works for you, but it must be
demonstrated first.

penny pinching bodge is not for you.

I think what the OP was after is, if you stick a stack of paper in
the tray, it picks up the paper, turns it over as it sends it to the
topside to get printed on. The 5P was the same way. Pretty much any
laser printer with the tray UNDER the toner cartridge will be this way.
Unless you use the fold-down tray, like he said. If you want to print
on letterhead from the slideout tray, you load it facing down. His
checks come facing up, in a certain order.

The IIIsi and 4si printers had the tray in the front of the machine,
the paper path was straight to the developing drum.

If you can find a decent one, a cheap alternative is the HP LaserJet
5L, 6L and 1100. There are probably others that load like that as
well.

Whoa there! It's about ten boxes of checks that can probably be
restacked/collated/combobulated. Let's not get the "I can't believe
it's a class-action lawsuit" line of printers involved.

Hey, never said I was a fan of them. But if you are only using it to
print checks..... May work for a while anyways! I got rid of my
LJ4000 and went to a 5000 so I could print 11x17 prints. This is my
10-12th different HP printer. Lost count. First was that boat anchor
LaserJet I converted to a LaserWriter Plus.
