Would you recommend Win XP for the following system:

P266 processor
8 Meg video card
128 M RAM
Phone modem
Dial-up Internet access
6 G HD

Or would Win ME or 98SE be more appropriate?

Thanks

No. You're close to the very bottom of what's supported. It may
run, but it will be very slow.

Yes.

I agree with Ken - You would find it Extremely Slow if it even runs at all !

You might be able to get XP to install, depending on hardware specifics, but you will not be happy with the performance. You will have very little hard drive space left for programs and personal files, and it will run so slow you will hardly be able to use it for more than one major program open at a time. Better to save the cost of XP to apply towards a newer computer. That machine will run just fine with Win98, with better performance.

They are right, and don't forget: ME is just horrible crap. Go with 98SE.

Personally, I'd say Win98SE. That's definately low, low end for XP. NT4 or
possible Win2k might work, but I'd up the memory.

Windows 2000?! On a first gen Pentium?! I don't *think* so!

That's why I said "possibly might." NT4 worked nicely on a similar system,
though.

Tony:

I multiboot Win98 SE, NTWS 4.0, Win2k Pro, Win XP Pro, Win XP Home, Win2k
server or Win2k3 server on a P200MMX with 256MB RAM on one of my test
machines, so XP Pro will work on a Celeron 266 or PII 266 (Pentium did not
have a 266 w/o overclocking). Some of the op systems have been used for
Office2k or OfficeXP testing. If you will only be using the computer for
"light" work (MSIE & Word) it should be usable with 128MB RAM, though 256MB
is desirable.

IMO, and based on my experiences with ME, I would avoid it. Win98 SE is
usable, but XP is such a good op sys that I would recommend you try it.

That is absolutely at the rock bottom end for XP, and I would stick to
98SE, which will work well on it

Sorry, EG, I didn't mean to come across that harshly - I really wouldn't
recommend it - NT4 yes, though.

CZ,
It is actually an AMD K6-266. I will probably go with 98SE, that seems to be
the consences.

Thanks
