Which license to purchase for retail Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade?

H

Heras&Andreana

I have read about this in this group by doing a search, but still, am
not seeing the right answer for my question.

I have a retail version of Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade installed
in one computer; I want to install this same version of Windows, using
the same CD in my other computer.

In an effort to save as much money as I can, I would like to purchase
an extra license instead of the whole retail package again.

Keeping in mind that this is an "Upgrade" version of XP Home, what is
the correct license to purchase for it?

Will the standard Windows XP Home Edition license that does not say
"Upgrade" be correct?

Anyone?

You've pretty much answered your own question. If you already own
a license for WinXp Home Upgrade, complete with the CD, than that is
precisely the type of additional license you're entitled to purchase.
You can't very well purchase an "additional" license for a version
that you don't already have.

The only second license you can buy is the kind of license you
already have--an upgrade. See
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/addlic.asp).

But it's not generally a good deal, and it probably will cost you
money instead of saving it. The problem is that Microsoft sells
additional licenses at only a small savings over the list price.
You're almost certainly better off just buying a complete second
copy from a discount source.

To save the most money, look online for the best price for the retail
upgrade. Be careful, if the price seems to low to be real, it probably is.
eBay purchases can be chancy and you should do a Google search on the vendor
before placing an order.

Make sure you are buying a retail XP Home if you buy on eBay. Watch out for
the terms "academic", "OEM", and "nfs" (not for resale). You cannot use
them. An additional license from MS will cost you more than buying an
upgrade package, or in some cases, a full version (the full version will
also do an upgrade). Usually the Feedback Rating on an eBay seller is a
pretty good guide. I don't buy items over $20 from resellers with fewer
than 100 feebacks and less than 98% positive. Most resellers get an
occasional 'revenge' negative rating from deadbeats.

Two things: You can get a second license, see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/addlic.asp
but the discount is small and it is probably cheaper just to buy a
second copy at a discount store.

An Upgrade needs a previous system in support of the license. Unless
you have a previous windows for the second machine, independent of
whatever is supporting the XP on the first, you need to get a separate
qualifying CD for that. You could probably pick up a cheap Win98 one on
eBay that would make it cheaper than buying a full XP; but make sure it
is a retail 98, not some maker's OEM Restore one

Thanks, everyone!

I more than anything wanted reassurance on the license issue I had,
you've all answered it well
