Which DL to use

B

bobnrobin

Older computer with Works 6 plus Word 2002. Today received files that when
tried to open got a popup saying it was created with a later ver. of Word and
would need a "convertor" to read. Checked the Office DL site, but noticed
there were several choices - couple very large - 4 and 2 hrs for DL. On
dialup that will be magnified.
Would very much appreciate if someone could offer help and advice as to best
course.
Thanks in advance

The best solution would have your sender save the files in a older version and
then resend them to you.

Thanks, Mary.
Don't I wish ! However, it's an online educational site, and I seriously
doubt that they would do that for one potential student.... In any case
would still have to be able to access future materials.
Thanks again, you are right - that would be best !

Mary's advice is the most practical, but in order to open Word 2007
documents and display Word 2007 fonts, you will need the compatibility
pack - http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101686761033.aspx

Thanks, Graham,
In retrospect, why did I not even think about future versions of Word not
being backward compatible.... Thanks for the link. That's my option for
now, so will just have to grin and bear it.
Thanks again, for taking the time to reply.

New versions *are* backward-compatible, but old versions cannot always be
"forward compatible." In this case, the file format was changed between Word
2003 and Word 2007 (as it also was between 95 and 97), so a converter is
required.
