Which CD-RW do I Use?

I want to back up my files at work onto a cdrw but when I look in the office
supply catalogue I find there's discs for different speeds. How do I know
which speed to choose? And if I'm in the wrong newsgroup, I apologize. If so,
just tell me where to go. No, wait, scratch that; let me rephrase. Please
tell me which newsgroup I need.

Most modern CD and DVD writers sense the rated speed of the media, and will
adjust accordingly.

If the media is rated faster or slower than the writer, it will not hurt in
most cases.

In either case the best actual speed will be no greater than the lower of
the media speed or the writer speed.

Thus, I use 52X CD-R media in my 48X writer. It also works in a friend's
24X writer.

One caution: I have heard that some of the really old CD-R media (1X to 4X)
may not work in modern writers.

A CD-R disc is rated at the fastest speed it can be written to. This means
that if a CD-R is rated as 16X it can be written to at 16X speed or slower.
CD-RW drives sold over the past few years have multi speed writing
capabilities. Unless you have a very old drive you can typically use most
discs regardless of their maximum rated speed.
