Is there a newsgroup that talks about the different browsers you can
use. I have used IE and Firefox and then Flashpeak Slimbrowser. I
am trying to get the least amount of errors and the best performance
out of my computer and I hear that having IE tends to give you more
problems. Any suggestions here?
I've always shunned IE as a matter of conviction. I used to use Navigator
until they sold their soul to AOL, tried a few others and found FireFox to
be the best all round browser for my needs. I have used Eudora for my mail
for years and XNews almost the same. The latest iterations of Mozilla can
handle all of my securitry concerns, has widespread support from many
vendors, ie
ZoneAlarm, AVG AntiVirus ...etal. Just too many to name.)
Most of these utilities and security programs can be found in their free
versions and work very well to protect the average home user. As in I have
NEVER had a serious attack of ANY kind that disabled my computer and I've
been on-line before the Internet ever got up and running. Sure, I've had
attacks, been inundated with DOS attempts and had to scrub Ad/Malware off
my drives but that's all part of the Windoze world, don'tcha know. :0)
The worst distruptions of my computing experience have been caused by none
other than the operating system I count on to make my machine go through
it's paces. Thanks a lot Bill!
My last motherboard upgrade a couple of months ago caused major probs that
prevented me from re-validating my paid for version of XP in time and
caused it to shut down for good. Up your'ss Bill! A local geek friend
gave me a copy of XP-Pro Student Edition that never needs validation and as
long as I keep my now useless Original XP CD I feel that I am more than
intitled to run this version. Thank the powers above that I still had 98SE
as a back-up in dual-boot with XP so my pain was minimal.
TIP: Stay with Fat32 if you ever want to get rid of XP. Once you use NTFS
you are F****d! The space you save on your HD, and the supposed security
you gain are all vapourware in this day and age of Terrabyte hard drives
and free software that can replace and be even better than the biggest
progs. OpenOffice -> FREE, open source, does MicroSoftOffice like a
native.. Imports WordPerfect(my old fave) and works great with my laser
printer. MSOffice -> Screws-up my WordPerfect files, causes my printer to
puke and generally pisses me off. The number of anti virus/ad/malware
utilities, graphics programs(we don't all need 1000 bells and whistles),and
free stuff that can make life easier without MicroSuck is TMTC, (too many
to count).
There is also Linux. Setting up Ubuntu 6.06 as a triple-boot system and
migrating away from WinDoze ASAP is my top priority now. It's amazing the
stuff it can do these days. Still a steep learning curve but isn't that
why we're all here ... to learn.
I hope this was of some use to you.
Say "Happy Birthday LabRat" it's officially after midnight Mountain time in
Northern Alberta. 52 and holding out for lots more.
