Where's my administrator account?

Beth

When I installed XP-Home upgrade, it never asked for
administrator information - such as password. The only
accounts that show up are the ones for me, my husband,
and guest. While I have administrator privileges, I am
*not* the administrator. Just for laughs, I attempted to
change my account name to "administrator" and it said
there already is an account named that. So where is it?

Press control-alt-delete twice at the welcome screen. Keep
doing stuff just for laughs and sooner or later you'll do
something that ain't so funny.

Hi

In Windows XP Home, you will need to boot into Safe mode to be
able to log on with the builtin Administrator account.

Greetings --

As you've learned, once any additional user accounts have been
created, the Administrator account will no longer be displayed on the
Welcome Screen. This is a default security feature. By design, the
only way to log into the Administrator account of WinXP Home is to
reboot into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at
the Welcome Screen will produce the standard login dialog box.

The built-in Administrator account really isn't intended to be
used for day-to-day normal use. The standard security practice is to
set a strong password on it and use it only to create another account
for regular use, reserving the Administrator account as a "back door"
in case something corrupts your regular account(s).

Bruce, thank you so much! And I appreciate the detail
you gave in the explanation. Sometimes knowing "why"
makes everything make much more sense.

It gets hidden once there is a regular user account with admin status
for day to day use, and is kept for emergencies. You get to it by
booting to Safe Mode (hit F8 as BIOS info goes to black to get the boot
menu for that) when it will appear on Welcome
