SInce the "Send A Sile Feedback Tool" doesn't work, I hope this is the place
to post a bug.

Here's what I did:
1. Set the font style to Heading 1.
2. Entered some text and pressed the Enter key.
3. Set the font style to Heading 2.
4. Entered some text and pressed the Enter key.
5. Set the font style to Emphasis.
6. Entered some text and pressed the Enter key.
7. Attempted to set the font style to Normal. I stays stuck on Emphasis. I
when to LIve preview and the font style Paragrah mark "Backward P" changes
with the mouse in hover. When I select a style it stays in Emphasis.

The Send a Smile feedback interface is currently not working, but in general
it does work and is the correct way to report bugs.

FWIW, Emphasis is a character style; the others you mentioned are paragraph
styles. Although many users regard it as a bug that Word does not remove
direct font formatting when you change styles (or even just press Enter),
that's the way it works in Word 2003 as well (and possibly some, but not
all, previous versions).

This is because Emphasis is a character style (a) rather than a
paragraph style (¶). The Normal style is actually applied even though
it may not look like it. If you follow the same steps in Word 2003
you'll find the behavior is the same.

A paragraph can have both a paragraph and a character style so what
you are seeing is the character style, Emphasis, with the Normal
paragraph style. If you want a better look, on the Home tab, in the
Styles group, click the Dialog Launcher (little arrow in the bottom
right corner) and open the Styles and Formatting task pane. Place your
insertion point in the paragraph you changed to Normal and at the
bottom of the S&F task pane click the "Style Inspector" button. You'll
see it reflects Normal as the paragraph style and Emphasis for the
text level formatting.

I agree, this can be confusing and one expects the bold and italic
formats to be removed when applying the Normal style. I provided some
feedback for you on this so we'll see what happens. :-)

Hi Beth,

Yes, the Styles gallery can be confusing enough already :)
Styles that are paragraph only show the ¶ in the gallery sample
but there is no differentiation for styles that are either character or ¶a (paragraph/character) styles, although the Style gallery
does show that [but that's now introducing an extra step and giving up writing space on screen to 'know' what type of style it is.
Consistency and visibility of style type in the gallery would probably be somewhat helpful, especially with the loss of the toolbar
that shows your current formatting always being available for view. :)
