I had to call to get a new activation code but where do I find it so I can
mark it down when I need to reinstall windows again.

It is not reusable so don't worry about it.

so your telling me I have to call everytime for a new one when I reinstall
windows? I have problems all the time, I'd be calling them several times a
year.

Make a backup image of your OS after it is working and has been activated.
Save it to disks or a separate partition. Then as long as it is on the same
computer you can just reload the backup and won't have to activate it. I've
done that for years and only had to activate again when I got a new
computer.

That may retrieve the CD code number, but it isn't the activation number.
AFAIR, when I had to replace my hard drive (it was 120 Gb instead of 100Gb)
I had to phone Microsoft for the activation code, as even though I had the
CD code I couldn't activate the reinstalled XP with it.

Why not? There is usually some specific reason for this type of
behavior, such as swapping motherboards with a BIOS Locked OEM
version.

Well, if re-activation is such a burden, why don't you fix the
problems, rather than needlessly reinstalling the OS?

Nope. Just the change of HD. Surprised me too, particularly as it wasn't
that much of a change. Everything else remained the same.

Or changing too much other hardware will do it but often you can reactivte on the internet. It is too damn bad that us honest folks have to pay this obscene activation process, It Sucks. The change MB is a PRIME example of activation hell!

Because Bruce sometimes I can't get to fix anything until I reinstall
windows. You tell me you never had to reinstall your windows?

I'll have to keeo up on my backups then. It just sucks that I paid for this
OS so isn't it my business how many times I have to reinstall it ? I have to
be limited to how many installs I can do.........this is crazy. You pay all
that money and your limited, well I guess I'm lucky it was only the upgrade
because paying $200 for a full one and then telling me I used up all the
times I can activate would really pis* me off. I should have stayed with 98.

Only when the hard drive containing the OS failed.

Exactly, my problems are that I can't even get to the desktop, so I have to
reinstall

So, replace the defective hard drive, and be done with it. No more
reinstallations required.

But there would be nothing wrong with the harddrive. It usually has to do
with software issues. I do a lot of installing and uninstalling of things.
I also have had changed hard drives a couple of times.

You're missing the point, entirely. Either you have defective
hardware, or are deliberately installing incompatible software. There
is no sound technical reason, short of a hard drive failure, to have to
re-install the OS. Simply cease the destructive computing practices,
and activation become a moot point.

There is no limit repeat no limit to the number of times you can
activate Windows XP on the same hardware.

However if activation requests for the same product key are received
too frequently then alarm bells start ringing and Microsoft wants to
make sure that it is still the same computer, and only one computer,
that this particular Windows XP license is being installed on.

However your apparent need for frequent reinstalls indicates that
there is something amiss with your computer or with how it is being
used. The last time I did a complete reinstall of the operating
system on my own computer was in 1993 with MS-DOS 6.22 and W4WG3.11.
Everthing since then, including multiple replacements of every
hardware component except perhaps the power cord, has been done by
upgrading the existing installed system and, when necessary, copying
the entire hard drive to a new one.

Good luck
