i changed the password to my user account on windows xp professional. I threw
away my written record because i received an error message saying "windows
cannot change this password". however, it apparently did, because when i
tried to log in the next day, my original password did not work. I cant
remember the new one. with that new password, i did create a hint.
However, my welcome screen was not enabled, so i couldn't access it.
I was able to copy my needed files to new account through the administrator
account (i did write down that one), but now i have hours of organizing ahead
of me. Plus i could not get my outlook contacts to the new account.
I activated the welcome screen, but there is no icon for displaying the
password hint, neither for the old account or for the new account.
how can i show the password hint?

Go into the Administrator account and reset or remove the password on your
account. This will be fine UNLESS you invoked encryption (this is not the
same as making the files private). If you did this, and you cannot
remember the password and do not have a password recovery disk or backup of
the credentials, the encrypted data is permanently lost.

Otherwise, in an extreme case, you will have to take ownership of the files
after changing the password.
