For Word 2003, but something similar for the other versions is possible.
There should be a taskbar on your screen, near the middle there is a button
which says show first line (or something to that effect) click it and the
full text should be shown. Be aware that it is usually not necessary to view
the full text as the outline view allows you to move text around easily from
one level to another. It's important to see the structure of the text
(headings) and play with them if necessary.

When you're in Outline View, you can see the Outline View toolbar. There
you'll find a button with two dark horizontal lines and two paler horizontal
lines. If you have tooltips displayed, and you hover your mouse over this
button, the tooltip says "Show First Line Only". Click this button to show
only the first line of each paragraph, or to show all the text in the
paragraphs. The keyboard shortcut for this is Alt-Shift-L.
