Where did my 2nd email identity go?

To be honest, this is the first time I have used newsgroups so I would have
nothing to compare it to and don't use any (unless you can tell me how to
find newsgroups for dogs, cats, reptiles, animal rescue, artists and art.) I
needed help with Windows Mail and was directed to these newsgroups -- which
are proving to be quite helpful! Thank you!

Outlook has to be purchased, am I right? Does it come as a stand alone email
client or do you have to buy it as part of the Office Suite ?-- which I
cannot afford and do not need, but if Outlook lets you switch identities, I
might think about just buying just that if it's not terribly expensive.

Thanks,
Dusty

Thanks Michael. I am happy to have some options. I share your opinion about
Windows Mail and I agree that Microsoft should be ashamed -- but then they
should be ashamed about a lot of things, shouldn't they? ;o)

I may just give Thunderbird a try before purchasing anything. It couldn't
hurt.

I actually did cross post my exact post here to the windows.vista.mail group
because I found it after I had already posted it here. I actually got a
livelier response in this group!

As far as Vista goes overall, I think when my old laptop with XP comes back
from repair -- this new one with Vista may just end up being the back-up!

Thanks for all your help,
Caren (aka Dusty, the Dusty Artist)

I don't think Outlook is what you really want.
Windows Mail and, as of now, Windows Live Mail do not
have "Identities". There are a lot folks making the request
for it to be added to WLM, but I don't think their efforts will work.
The only way to get something like OE had in WM is to use
Steve Cochran's software.

Thunderbird has Multiple Identities.
Here's an easy tutorial on using Identities in Thunderbird.

I have been known to say a harsh word about Microsoft,
once or twice. ;-)

I've grown to like Vista, but I have been using it since the betas.
There are some things that users may need to work through
and there are definitely numerous things Microsoft needs to
fix/tweak in Vista. You are not alone in feeling XP may be better,
it's a constant debate in this forum. If you have some specific
problems, post them here and someone might be able to help.

I saw from your headers that you use Road Runner, here's some
info on using/setting up newsgroups using Road Runner's news servers.
Oh, and you'll probably find newsgroups that have something to do
with "dogs, cats, reptiles, animal rescue, artists and art".

There will be some know-it-all-idiots who will try to tell
you to "top post" putting your reply at the top of the post
or "bottom post" putting the reply at the bottom- ignore them
and post how you want to. The "bottom posters", which I do
normally, are typically antiquated and outdated old farts,
which I am not. :-)

Well, I'm out of here for tonight.

Take care, Caren.

windows live mail does not have identities, however it does have seperate
inboxes for all emails if you
have many accounts

he can have the email in seperate "folders" without needing to make rules.

Yes, of course. However, that's not the same as what
Outlook Express had with their "identities", and it's
not what the poster is looking for.

Thanks for that info. Too bad Thunderbird becoming bloated. I don't know
why
things that aren't broken are always being "fixed" which then makes them
broken. If they don't have a real Vista version I guess it's probably better
to avoid Thunderbird for the time being.
I didn't mean to scare you off from trying
Thunderbird. It's easy enough to check it out
and see how it works. I was just adding a
minor caveat about Mozilla software.

Unfortunately, Google is bankrolling Mozilla for
the most part, and Google itself is quickly transforming
into an advertising company. A good example of
the new direction is the fact that the option to
block 3rd-party images was removed from Firefox 2.

On the other hand, that doesn't make it as bad
as IE by a long shot. :) I wouldn't use IE online, and
I wouldn't get started using any Microsoft software if it
can be avoided. I still use OE because I haven't had
the ambition to change to something better. But using
OE has its costs. I always leave the Preview window
closed and only open unrecognized email as the raw
source text.

Anything *is* better than Windows Mail.
Although, if you purchase Steve Cochran's
program, it may make WM bearable for you.
I don't like, I would never recommend it, and
Microsoft should be ashamed for ever releasing
it in such a terrible state. Microsoft has basically
admitted that it sucked, they've moved all development
to Windows Live Mail. In the process, they have caused
a lot of confusion. Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail,
Windows Live Mail (was Windows Live Mail Desktop),
Windows Live Hotmail ( was just Hotmail, then it was going
to be Windows Live Mail) ... that's a lot to keep up with.

Try Windows Live Mail, you may like it.
It is better than Windows Mail.

If not to your liking, give Thunderbird a workout.
Solid and dependable.

The newsgroup for Windows Mail;
microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail
Windows Live Mail;
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

Good luck!

Take care,

Michael

If you are looking for a good email program I use one called POCOMail
which I find very good.

Handles multiple email adresses very well. I have each email address
check for email automatically at different frequencies.

Only problem is that it is not free after initial use 30 days?

To use the newsgroups you want, you should start by checking how to
set up a connection to your internet provider's newsgroup server.
The instructions should be somewhere on their web site, but often
hard to find. One newsgroup you may want to subscribe to is
alt.binaries.pictures.animals - it often has pictures of the kinds of
animals you want.
