Without creating a shortcut or copying the exe from to program folder to my
desktop. I don't want a shortcut nor do I want the IE7 icon with the file
name (iexplore.exe) because I can't get rid od the .exe extension. thanks.

Since you didn't tell us when it disappeared this is the best I can offer.

Internet Explorer 7 Desktop icon missing
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555849

Hide/Show Internet Explorer Desktop Icon

Restore the missing Internet Explorer icon to the Desktop in Windows XP
(link to a .REG file)

Good luck
