Where are the Windows 7 Newsgroups

Thanks Dave and Bruce for your replies. I guess it's unavailable for me.

Wyman

If you want a free USENET news server, try this. This server
accepts posts and does not use authentication. I just updated
the newsgroup list, and alt.windows7.general is available.
This is just about the most open server you can find, so there
is no delay getting started. (You don't have to fill out a
form and apply, to be able to use it. You just use it.)

nntp.aioe.org

That server does have some posting rules - basically the server
needs defenses against spamming, and to do that, while not
having authentication, means there can be some weird rules in
place. The server has a limit to the number of posts it will
accept in one day, but that generally isn't a problem.

I use this as a newsreader program. There are many others
of those available as well. This may look like an email program,
but you can use the "Newsgroup Account" feature, to start using
USENET.

There are other free servers, but I don't know if they
carry alt.windows7.general .

In my little world Comcast stopped providing newsgroups as part of their
internet service. That stopped me from participating in some of the
newsgroups I enjoyed.

There seems to be a shift away from newsgroups towards web forums. I
noticed a diminishing participation in other popular newsgroups, like
alt.home.repair. I will miss the groups, but time and progress moves on.

I cannot find any Windows 7 Usenet groups. Where are they? Where are the
MVPs hanging out?

No Win7 group on msnews. Very likely won't be. MS seems to prefer Web
based forums these days. Same old, same old. What they want, not what
users want.

Note that it did *not* stop you from participating. Comcast was only
one source of newsgroups. There are many other news servers available
to you.

I recommend that you begin by trying free news servers such as
eternal-september. If there are newsgroups you want that aren't
carried by the free servers, you can almost certainly get everything
from a server like giganews; there's a fee for using giganews, but for
most people, it's affordable.

Just FYI, what used to be Motzarella is now called eternal-september.
And they do not (at least not yet) carry alt.windows7.general.

Thanks for your link to http://www.newzbot.com/ above. It found
aioe.org for me. I don't know anything yet about how good it is, but
I'll give it a try.

Thanks for the info.

Still, the OP is clearly using *some* Usenet service provider. And if
that provider (like mine - Cavtel) carries the above newgroup, the
method I outlined should help the OP find, read, and post to that group.

Can you determine provider OP is using from this bit of info from the
headers?:

NNTP-Posting-Host: c-71-239-33-37.hsd1.il.comcast.net 71.239.33.37

Eternal-September (formerly Motzarella) is a decent free text-only
newsgroup provider. Currently, they are not offering
alt.windows7.general, but I'm sure they eventually will.

For the time being - and if one doesn't mind a Web portal to that
group - alt.windows7.general may be found here:

Also, Eternal-September:

Wyman is posting here using msnews.microsoft.com as his news server.

Ah, ha. Good sleuthing. Where in the headers is this clue?

Looks like Wyman needs another provider, then, for any non-MS groups.
Someone else posted about AIOE. I've used them but had enough problems
connecting that I stopped.

Microsoft decided to get rid of MVPs because they are are giving a very
bad name to Microsoft and its products. Half the time MVPs are just
abusing Microsoft customers because they can't answer the questions and
they blame users for not knowing how to resolve a particular computer
problem.
