System Restore "restore points" are missing or deleted:

They are part of a hidden system file on each drive monitored by System
Restore. You cannot backup the restore points as such you have to backup
your system as well. You could try using the generic NT Backup which is
available in Windows in <All programs\Accessories\System tools\Backup>

See http://www.argentuma.com/backup/software/system-restore.html

There are much easier ways of saving your system available for example
create an image of your system drive with Acronis True Image. This is not
free but it is invaluable!

They are kept in the folder \System Volume Information\. This is a
protected hidden system folder.
The only identifier which has any access should be SYSTEM. It would be a
very bad idea for
you to do anything with the contents of this folder.

Back it up using the ntbackup that came with XP is probably easiest.
Then you just use ntbackup to Retore it again if/when you need it.
What you back up is called the "System State". It's fairly small,
includes all of the registry component part and everything critical to
the system but is still a smallish file. It's also stored in a .bkf
file, which is a text file.
Or if you have other backup SW, and it will figure out System State,
you can use that too of course.

A popular free program that many use to take control of Registry
Backups is ERUNT
